MamaBlogger365 - 2012 Change is in the Air by Veronica Hosking

The girls had two full weeks off for winter break. They returned to school for the second half of the 2011/12 school year on the 9th. At the end of the week, both brought home their second quarter report cards. Gretchen got an A+ in math and B's in the other subjects. Rachael brought home the requirements for 8th graders to move up to 9th, and I told her, "You may have a hard time getting promoted when you keep bringing home straight A's." ;)

This year is full of change for our family. Next month my husband will be celebrating his 40th birthday. Then in May both girls will be promoted. Gretchen will finish 5th grade and be moving up to the middle school. Rachael will finish 8th grade and move up to high school. Mom was feeling a little left out of all these changes, nothing new was on my horizon. Then I found an opportunity to apply for a summer residency in poetry. Since the girls started back up at school, Mom has been busy writing her proposal and polishing her portfolio.

Now with my part of the application process complete, I am left waiting to see if I'll be going down to Tucson sometime over the summer. Of course, I'm not just sitting here twiddling my thumbs. I have a 40th birthday party to plan and then there is the celebration at the end of the school year to work out. As both girls do very well in school and moving up to a new school is exciting, we want to show the girls how proud we are of their hard work.

The beginning of a new year is filled with expectation. 2012 marks memorable life changes for my family. I hope they prove to be positive experiences we will cherish.

MamaBlogger365 - Take a Letter... by Jennifer Flaten

Who doesn’t love a good old-fashioned handwritten letter? I know I love getting them, which is why I am thrilled that my son - a third grader - is required to write one letter a week.

The letters, nearly illegible due to his lack of interest in penmanship, come home each week in a special spiral notebook.

MamaBlogger365 - Back to School by Elizabeth Kathryn Gerold-Miller

Wednesday, September 7, 2011, 6:30 A.M. I woke up my five-year-old with a gentle hug. “Rise and shine. It’s time to get ready for school.”

She had been looking forward to this day for a few years now, as she watched her siblings leave for school and come back every day. Now it was the dog’s turn to watch the kids all leave, forlorn, wishing she could go wherever they went all day.

MamaBlogger365 - Fall Back into Learning by Jennifer Flaten

School is in session. At parent night, the 5th grade teachers announced that this year’s writing program would focus on editing and revising.

The whole room chuckled when the teacher commented that kids love to write but hate to edit and revise.

While I laughed along, I have to agree; I love writing, but editing and revising... not so much.

MamaBlogger365 - Encouraging Your Child to Learn by Diane Lang

Like lots of other moms, you're probably working hard to prepare your children for a new school year, whether you've already started or have a couple of days left of summer "vacation"... here's Diane Lang with some tips on how to help your child start the year off right!

Encourage conversation - Encourage extended conversations by asking your children questions. Show your interest with non-verbal communications like smiling, nodding your head and touching -- pat their arm or shoulder while they talk.
